My writing instructor, Bonnie Hearn Hill, doesn't like scenes in bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and places like that. She will allow an occasional phone call if it is absolutely necessary. I even sneaked in a letter, but it's not really a scene. I didn't have any bar scenes, but I did have several coffee shop and restaurant scenes. Some were cut, others moved to more interesting places. For example, Brian and Karen have a picnic on the University of Texas campus in one scene.

I was allowed one restaurant scene, but I had to create a fictional place to make it work. The Quarry Restaurant is patterned after the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC, Canada.
